The Regional English Language Office would like to invite secondary and primary school teachers of English and other subjects to participate in a free online course on Environmental Education, Media Literacy, and Critical Thinking. This regionally focused program will welcome teachers from Poland, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia for learning and exchange. 

The course will include content from the “Teaching for the Future: English Teaching to Take on Climate Change” course created by Kansas State University as part of the Online Professional English Network (OPEN) Program as well as materials from English Language Specialist Jeff Share’s publication Teaching Climate Change to Adolescents: Reading, Writing, and Making a Difference.

Description: Coursework is designed to introduce the theory and practice of teaching about climate change, environmentalism, and media literacy in the English as a foreign language (EFL) classroom. Through informative videos and practical readings, you will explore approaches for teaching English or teaching in English that are not only effective but engaging for teen students. 

In the seven weekly live Zoom sessions with the English Language Specialist, you will have the opportunity to reflect on your learning in the online course, learn how to implement the content, practice creating new teaching materials, and brainstorm and network with like-minded teachers. You will learn theory and strategies necessary for successful environmental and media literacy instruction for teenage students with different levels of English proficiency.

Who can apply? English teachers from primary and secondary schools, teachers of other subjects. Learning Objectives and Learner Outcomes 

By the end of the course, you will:

• Demonstrate increased understanding of climate change as well as the basic concepts, causes, and impacts of climate change
• Incorporate strategies for developing teacher and student critical thinking skills
• Review principles of project-based learning (PBL)
• Review models that integrate language and content (CBI, CLIL, EMI)
• Develop classroom-ready materials and assessments that incorporate the theme of climate change and integrate critical thinking, media literacy, and problem-solving skills
• Discuss how to collaborate across disciplines inside and outside of schools to more effectively help students gain a full understanding of the issue of climate change

This program will be facilitated by English Language Specialist (EL Specialist) Jeff Share, who will guide teachers through the online course content. The EL Specialist will conduct live, online workshops reviewing and deepening the participants' learning each week, giving them more practical techniques and strategies, and answering any questions that participants may have. The EL Specialist Jeff Share will also work with participants in small groups and/or one-to-one coaching settings on teaching climate change in their specific school settings. 

Certificates: At the conclusion of the program the participants will receive certificates. Only those who complete all course tasks and attend 80% of the synchronous online Zoom meetings will be presented with certificates. 

Opportunity to participate in in-person workshop: After the conclusion of the online course with cohorts in Fall 2023 and Spring 2024, a small group of participants will be chosen to travel and participate in a professional training focusing on extension practice, professional development, and implementing course content in their classes. The workshop will be in June or July of 2024. 

Dates and Time: This course is comprised of 3 parts. Part 1 is an online course during which teachers will complete tasks, readings, and discussions asynchronously. Part 2 is seven virtual sessions over Zoom with English Language Specialist Jeff Share on Thursdays at 18:00 Poland and 19:00 Baltics from April 4-May 23.  Finally, after the course for Part 3, participants will have the opportunity to participate in coaching with the Specialist as they extend activities and implement the coursework in their classrooms. The Zoom meetings and the self-paced online course will be a total of about 3-4 hours of work each week.

Zoom sessions (synchronous): April 4, 11, 18, 25 (break for May 2) and May 9, 16, and 23 at 18:00 in Poland and 19:00 in the Baltics

Coaching sessions (sign-up, blended formats): May-June

The program has been designed for a group of 50 teachers.

English Language Specialist Jeff Share

Jeff Share’s research and practice focuses on preparing educators to teach critical media literacy for social and environmental justice. He was an award-winning photojournalist and bilingual elementary school teacher. Since 2007 he has taught at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Jeff wrote: Media Literacy is Elementary: Teaching Youth to Critically Read and Create Media. He co-authored: Teaching Climate Change to Adolescents: Reading, Writing, and Making a Difference, and The Critical Media Literacy Guide: Engaging Media and Transforming Education.
